The Mozambique Road Trip Planner: Routes, Stops and Driving Tips

Do you enjoy road trips that let you discover a country beyond its main cities? Mozambique has plenty of coastline to explore, from the capital's food markets to beach towns where diving and boat trips draw visitors to the Indian Ocean. The challenge is working out how much of the country you can cover without spending most of your holiday on the road.

A Mozambique road trip can focus on the southern coast or continue farther north. Your available time will make a big difference to which route makes sense.

Start in Maputo

Give Maputo a day before heading out of the capital. Its markets, older buildings and restaurants provide a good introduction to city life, and seafood is a natural choice when looking for local dishes.

Use the time to sort out the practical details too. Check the rental vehicle, buy any supplies you need and decide where you'll spend the first night outside the city. Leaving without a clear idea of the next stop can make the first driving day harder to manage.

Head North to Inhambane

The EN1 connects Maputo with Inhambane, but this is not a short hop between destinations. Xai-Xai gives you an option for breaking up the drive if you prefer not to cover the whole distance in one day.

Inhambane is known for its historic centre and access to Tofo, a coastal village popular with divers and snorkellers. Tofo is the place to plan a few nights if marine activities are high on your list. Excursions depend on sea conditions, so check with local operators before building your schedule around a particular trip.

Make Time for Vilankulo

Vilankulo takes the journey farther north, but the reason to go is clear: the town is a departure point for trips to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Boat excursions bring visitors to islands and reefs, with activities depending on local conditions and the trip selected.

This is not a stop to squeeze into a spare afternoon if you're driving from the Inhambane area. Allow time for the journey, an overnight stay and the boat trip itself.

A Practical Mozambique Road Trip Itinerary

For seven days, a southern route is more manageable than trying to include every destination.

  • Days 1–2: Maputo — Explore the city and prepare for the drive.
  • Day 3: Xai-Xai — Break the journey north with an overnight stop.
  • Days 4–6: Inhambane and Tofo — Visit the town and set aside time for the beach or an ocean excursion.
  • Day 7: Begin the return to Maputo — Keep your departure arrangements in mind when deciding how far to drive.

Want to include Vilankulo and the Bazaruto Archipelago? Add days to the trip or remove some earlier stops. Trying to fit both the southern coast and the farther-north destinations into one week can leave little time for either.

Driving Tips for Mozambique

Road conditions are not the same everywhere. The main highway is connected with many larger towns, but potholes, rain and flooding can affect travel times. Roads leading to beaches or remote accommodation are mostly rough or sandy.

  • Drive on the left. Review local traffic rules before setting off.
  • Avoid driving after dark. Rural roads may have limited lighting, pedestrians and livestock.
  • Refuel in larger towns. Don't assume fuel will be available at every stop.
  • Check whether you need a 4x4. A standard car may suit paved routes, while sandy tracks can require a more capable vehicle.
  • Check conditions before departure. The Mozambique road map can help with route planning and road-condition checks.
  • Keep your documents handy. Bring your driving licence, vehicle papers, insurance and any rental-company permissions.

Sort Out Entry Requirements Before Departure

International visitors should check the entry rules for their nationality before travelling. Review the applicable Mozambique eVisa information before finalising your plans, and confirm the requirements for your intended entry point if you are crossing a land border.

If you're renting a car, check whether the agreement allows travel on your chosen route and whether additional documents are needed for border crossings.

Which Route Makes Sense for You?

If you have one week, concentrate on Maputo and the Inhambane area, with time for Tofo. If the Bazaruto Archipelago is a major reason for your visit, plan a longer journey north to Vilankulo.

Decide which destination matters most before booking your accommodation. That choice will help determine the route, the number of overnight stops and how much driving you need to fit into each day.
