Petra looks great in photos, but it feels different once you’re standing there. This ancient city in southern Jordan is known for its rock-cut buildings, above all the Treasury, which shows up at the end of a narrow gorge called the Siq.
If Petra is on your travel list, these Petra travel tips will make the visit a lot easier.
The walk through the Siq leads you to the Treasury, but that’s just the start. Petra covers a huge area, with stone paths, steps and steep sections, so wear proper walking shoes, especially if you plan to go past the main entrance.
Getting there early also means cooler temperatures and fewer people in your Treasury photos.
Shade is hard to find in a lot of Petra. Take plenty of drinking water, wear a hat and put on sunscreen, especially in the warmer months. A small backpack keeps everything in one place.
The Treasury gets most of the attention, but Petra has plenty of other sights. Look for the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs and the Monastery. The Monastery means a long climb, so give yourself time and don’t rush it.
Entry rules depend on your nationality, so read the Jordan eVisa information before you travel to Jordan.
Petra is better at an easy pace. Give yourself time to explore, take breaks and look at the details carved into the sandstone.
