Southern Tenant Farmers Museum

On one hot afternoon in the month of July in 1934 18 farmers - 11 black and seven white - made history by joining together in Tyronza, Arkansas, to create the first integrated farming union in the United States. In later years, women were appointed to the leadership roles as well. A large portion of the organisation's activities were performed at the office of the two of its founders, H. L. Mitchell and Clay East, until threats of violence caused them to move its headquarters to Memphis.

Mitchell's dry cleaning business as well as East's service station, as well as the old Bank of Tyronza, have been restored by Arkansas State University to be used for the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum. Photographs, oral histories, artefacts and oral histories provide the tales of sharecropping and tenant farming, as well as the struggles of agricultural labour, including the background of the Southern Tenant Farmers Union. The Southern Tenant Farmers Union is considered to be a precursor in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

Lakeport Plantation

Lakeport Plantation House Lakeport Plantation house has been described as"the Jewel of the Delta. The house isn't your typical home tour through a plantation. There's no house packed full of antique furniture. There aren't any decorated walls or carpeted floors. There's no romanticised picture of this part of the South. Instead, you will discover a home that is a statement in its architectural style, and unobtrusive exhibits that recount the lives of those who lived and worked on the plantation-landowners and slave workers, tenant farmers, sharecroppers, artisans and craftsmen as well as the restoration team who restored the house to its former glory.

The structure was built in the year 1859. Lakeport is one of the few remaining plantation residences located on the Mississippi River in Arkansas and is thought of as one of the state's premiere architectural landmarks. After a long period of neglect in the early 20th Century, Lakeport retains many of its original architectural elements which were restored by an all-state restoration team headed by Arkansas State University. Its Greek Revival home is on the National Register and is a project of the Save America's Treasures initiative and the recipient of distinctions from the National Trust for. The Lakeport Plantation is Arkansas's southern anchorage for the Ten-state Great River Road National Scenic Byway.
