Bermeo, is one of the most important towns on the entire Biscay coastline, since it preserves a large part of Basque history and culture intact through its streets and cliffs. The best way to get to Bermeo, located 35 kilometers north of Bilbao, is by car, a half-hour drive from the city.If you don't have a car, you can take the Euskotren Bermeo-Bilbao train line or the Bizkaibus bus which will take you there.

 

Port of Bermeo

Bermeo is one of the largest and most populated towns in the Busturialdea region, a town that became the second most important fishing port in Bizkaia thanks and canning activity in the area. Today, Bermeo, stands as one of the few fishing villages that continues to live in the same way that its ancestors lived, from the sea and from fishing. Bormeo is characterized by having a lot of pieces of art, and in addition to the Monument of the Fishermen, there are other iron and bronze sculptures placed throughout the municipality and which have become another of the tourist attractions to visit in Bermeo.

Among our favorites is "El Regreso" located at the end of the breakwater of the Old Port and representing a stout sailor with an oar on his shoulder and his son, his little one, holding his hand, returning home. Before reaching this sculpture, you will pass in front of a larger one, known as Olatua and which represents a wave. The sculptures represent the past of the city and its connection with the sea and the seamen.

 

Plaza Sabino Arana

This square or plaza is located in the historic center, located above the old port, this part of the town is another of the most beautiful places to see in Bermeo.

In this square you will find the Town Hall and the Church of Santa María, one of the best examples of the neoclassical style of Bizkaia. Another of the churches that you cannot miss in Bermeo is that of Santa Eufemia in the Gothic style and which has its origins in the 13th century.

 

Convent of San Francisco
